Light Out of the Darkness

Music for the kickoff of the 2011-12 Season includes Brahms’ Tragic Overture, von Weber’s Clarinet Concerto No.1 featuring Charles Messersmith on clarinet and Symphony No. 4 in F minor by Tchaikovsky.

Clarinetist Charles Messersmith returns home to perform with the Folsom Symphony. Now principal clarinet for the Charleston (S.C.) Symphony Orchestra, he grew up in Sacramento and played for Michael Neumann’s SYS. He has performed around the country including San Francisco’s Davies Symphony Hall and the Kennedy Center in Washington D.C.

A Joyful Celebration

Start the holiday season with Variations on a Rococo Theme, Op. 33 featuring Susan Lamb Cook on cello; add Concerto for Oboe and Violin in C minor featuring Anita Felix on violin and Curtis Kidwell on oboe, Nutcracker Suite and complete the evening by joining the orchestra in a holiday Sing-Along.

Susan Lamb Cook is an internationally known cellist and chamber musician who is now artist affiliate in cello and chamber music at the University of California, Davis. Susan studied in Vienna and has performed with orchestras in the US, Canada, Europe and the Middle East. She is the co-author of the “Guide to Teaching Strings” and supports music education in the Sacramento region with school performances and classroom visits.

Curtis Kidwell received his master of music degree from the San Francisco Conservatory. His teachers have included Pamela Haki, Erica Yamada, and John de Lancie. He is a well-known oboe/English horn instructor as well as chamber and orchestral music arranger.

Anita Felix is currently in her sixth season as concertmaster of the Folsom Symphony performs regularly with the Sacramento Opera, Sacramento Choral Society, Sacramento Philharmonic, Sacramento Ballet and the Elk Grove Strauss Festival. Highlights of Anita’s solo and duo performances include a 2001 CD of violin and piano sonatas with her father featuring the works of Beethoven, Schubert and Franck.

Music of the Heart

Music performed tonight will make you fall in love all over again. Featured selections include Tchaikovsky’s Romeo and Juliet Overture, “Moonlight” Sonata featuring Natsuki Fukasawa on piano and Violin Concerto No. 1 featuring Folsom Symphony’s Anita Felix on violin and much more!

Pianist Natsuki Fukasawa makes a return appearance to Folsom. An internationally acclaimed pianist, Natsuki has performed around the world as both soloist and chamber musician and in 2004 won Best Chamber Music Recording of the Year from the Danish Music Awards. She is an artist faculty member at the Schlern International Music Festival in Tyrol, Italy, coaches for the California Capital Chamber Music Workshop and teaches at her private studio in Northern California.

Glorious Beethoven!
The Folsom Symphony and Sacramento Master Singers along with guest soloists present Symphony No. 9 in D minor “Choral” by Beethoven under the direction of Maestro Michael Neumann. Additional orchestra and choral works will be performed under the baton of guest conductor Dr. Ralph Hughes.
